On this spectacular coach holiday, we have brought together the emotion of the Oberammergau Passion Play with the stunning scenery and amazing architecture of Bavaria's fairy tale castles.
Visit the village of Hohenschwangau, where King Ludwig's famous Neuschwanstein Castle is perched dramatically on a hilltop, and spend time in the walled town of Füssen. In Austria, we discover Innsbruck, the 'capital' of the Tyrol, set against a backdrop of soaring Alpine mountains and home to fine regal architecture.
Finally, witness the spectacular and emotional Oberammergau Passion Play. Held every ten years in the German village, the play tells the story of the Passion of Christ. It is a magically moving experience, one you do not want to miss.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Local departure by coach, then to Belgium for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Head through Germany to reach the hotel in the Reutte area of Austria for a three-night stay.
Day 3: A day to discover fairy tale castles on our included excursion. Firstly, visit the village of Hohenschwangau and King Ludwig's famous castle, Neuschwanstein. Built in the 19th century, this fairy tale castle is dramatically perched on a hilltop with panoramic views over the countryside and the royal castle of Hohenschwangau.
Please note: at Neuschwanstein there is a degree of walking involved, as well as a considerable number of steps to climb. In the afternoon, visit the delightful walled town of Füssen, where you can spend time exploring the maze of narrow lanes or simply relax in a terrace café in the main square.
Day 4: Today's included excursion takes you east to Innsbruck, 'capital' of the Tyrol. Set with a backdrop of soaring Alpine mountains and fine regal buildings, it is a major winter sports city, having hosted the Winter Olympics.
See the internationally renowned ski jump, Bergisel, where you can marvel at the bravery and courage of the jumpers – it's even more frightening than it appears on TV! The Golden Roof is testimony to the time in the 15th century when Innsbruck was at the centre of European culture and politics and Emperor Maximilian I based his Imperial Court here. Today you can enjoy its relaxing squares and vibrant shopping streets.
Day 5: Oberammergau Passion Play: Leave Austria and travel to the Oberammergau area to check into our overnight accommodation. Lunch will be at noon, ahead of the Passion Play.
The play has a running time of approximately five hours in total, with a meal served during the interval. The performance begins at 2:30pm, concluding around 10:30pm, with a three-hour break at 5:00pm when dinner is provided. After the performance, you will be transferred back to your accommodation - The play is traditionally performed in German and a textbook with the complete play text is included on all tours.
Day 6: Leave after breakfast and head through Germany, arriving at our overnight hotel in Belgium this evening.
Day 7: Return home.
